Claudine Muru (Ngāti Kuri / Te Aupouri / Tainui / Tapuika / Ngāi Te Rangi/ Ngati Raukawa) is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist who has exhibited both nationally and internationally.
Claudine is a graduate of Massey University (Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts). She draws inspiration from the stories, cultural heritage and spiritual legacy of her tipuna.
Known for her glass works, Claudine was introduced to the medium by master glass artist John Anthony Penman (Ngā Puhi / Rhode Island School of Design). Together they collaborated, using Claudine’s concepts and designs, and John’s master craftsmanship, to create the works of hotblown sculptured glass.
Sculpting molten lumps of glass with steel tools, Muru’s glass works explore connections to ancestral knowledge of planting ceremonies during Matariki. Her bold forms of kūmara using hues that are rich in colour. These works often reference themes of regeneration, rebirth and whakapapa.
She has now turned her eye to precious metals with the Maioha collection. Her fascination with the art of molten metal augured a natural progression from the medium of molten glass.

“I create art to find a path back to the meaning that my ancestors found in the world. I feel that I have to do my part to preserve & renew the stories, cultural heritage & spiritual legacy of our tipuna.”
